Cultural venue with natural charm

A modern culture barn has emerged on the site of an old farm around a striking walnut tree in Höchberg near Würzburg.

Good things come to those who wait – this is true of the development of the culture barn in Höchberg. Back in 1990, the market town in the Lower Franconian district of Würzburg secured a plot of land with an old farm to be developed for the benefit of the town. A protracted process ensued, but absolutely no one doubts that the investment was well worth it.

Farming history integrated into the new building

Under the management of Architekten Stadtplaner Franke und Messmer BDA PartGmbB of Emskirchen, a state-of-the-art, barrier-free culture barn with beautiful grounds now graces the site, which, with its diverse and target-group-specific events programme, has become a key cultural venue.

Visitors can enjoy the old farm garden and relax on the wide stone steps around the distinctive walnut tree on the land. Recycled natural stone features in the masonry around the inviting entrance too, the design of which reflects its rural history. A couple of drystone walls in the forecourt have been preserved as visually appealing elements which are also reminiscent of the old barn.

Walnut elements make a striking impression

At the heart of the new building is the open-plan hall, which is bathed in light thanks to its large floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors and enjoys views out onto the old walnut tree and the natural garden. The dark supporting structure of the pitched ceiling has been left visible, with its trussed beams and silver-coloured vent pipes set off by circular lights.

As in the hall, decorative walnut elements are used to striking effect in the foyer. Adjoining the foyer, which has large-scale tiled flooring in variegated grey tones, a small bar and kitchenette offer space for serving drinks. White Troldtekt acoustic panels have been installed to fit in with the anthracite-coloured window frames, the large brown folding doors and the light walls. They also feature in the washrooms and contribute to the harmonious colour scheme.
