Soft materials with a sharp expression

Texture takes centre stage in a holiday home at Nissum Bredning in Thy, Denmark. The house is situated on the coastline, which means that the light is both very bright and highly variable.

UlykkesPatientForeningen patient association has constructed this holiday home for the use of its members. It enjoys an amazing location surrounded by fir trees and overlooking the fjord. Architecturally, the house boasts a very simple construction, featuring a central and well-lit living area and open kitchen with step-free access to a large wooden terrace on both sides of the building. The house is also designed with a focus on maximum accessibility for people with physical disabilities and their carers.

On each side of the living area are bedrooms and bathrooms with room for a total of five people. On the terrace, near the entrance, there is a smaller covered terrace so there is always shelter to be found from the otherwise rather harsh landscape. The façades are in cedar, which has quickly changed character where it has had sun exposure, while on the arrival side it still appears very warm and welcoming.

Contrast and context

Indoors, architect Jon Hune also gave a great deal of consideration to the choice of materials. The client wanted maintenance-free and natural materials, which Hune found ideal for this building. The holiday home is constructed in a combination of wood and brick from the local Helligsø Teglværk brickworks, which lend character to the space along with the veneer panels.

The floors have been laid with large clinker tiles, and the ceilings have been installed with Troldtekt acoustic panels in the colour natural wood, which in addition to improved acoustics gives an elegant, precise look to the ceiling surfaces. Wood, bricks, clinker tiles and Troldtekt ceilings are used consistently in all rooms, creating visual coherence and a harmonious look.

The natural light from the panorama windows enhances the properties of the materials - both their soft, natural surface and their sharp expression. The holiday home appears to be almost designed by its materials.
