Silent parking under the Iceberg
The underground parking facility reflects the Iceberg residents. Cycling is their preferred means of transport, and they appreciate being able to park their bike in a dry place near the staircase. Troldtekt panels have been used to dampen the acoustics around all niches and entrances.
Thanks to its iconic pointed peaks and ice blue balconies, the Iceberg stands out from a distance – a sculptural building situated within the disused container terminal of the Port of Aarhus, now called Aarhus Ø. All the apartments in the new urban district boast a sea view, but many residents also value the modern and unique design of their home.
In designing the Iceberg, the architects – Aarhus-based Cebra A/S in collaboration with JDS, SEARCH and Louis Paillard – focused on optimising the view and maximising the amount of natural light for all residents, which led to the special geometry. Since its completion, the Iceberg has attracted considerable interest and has received several international awards (MIPIM Award 2013, Architizer A+Award and the 2015 ArchDaily Building of the Year Award).
Like the other dwellings on Aarhus Ø, the Iceberg's parking facilities are located under the building to create space for activities between the buildings. As is the case for all parking facilities, focus has been rational utilisation of the space and on robust materials.
The areas around the staircases offer cycle parking, which has proved to be a very popular solution! Many of the parking spaces are designed as niches where Troldtekt panels in natural colours are used to improve the acoustics and to add a pleasant texture and warmth to the otherwise 'cold' basement.
